How to use

The companions all work the same way, so this one guide covers every game in the catalog.

What is a Game Companion?

A Game Companion is a spreadsheet that pulls the reference material out of a Wargame Design Studio title and lays it out so you can read it: orders of battle, victory point locations, scenario lengths, arrival turns — the things the game shows you a few rows at a time, on one screen instead.

It is not a mod, a patch or a cheat. Nothing is installed and nothing touches your game files. It is a reading aid, and it is free.

Four steps

  1. Download the companion for your game

Every game page has a single download button. The file is an ordinary .xlsx spreadsheet — nothing to install, nothing to register.

  2. Open it in any spreadsheet program

Excel, LibreOffice Calc and Google Sheets all open the file. There are no macros, so you can ignore any prompt about enabling content.

  3. Pick your scenario

The scenario sheet lists every scenario in the game — date, location, size, turn count. Find the one you are about to play; there is space to log how it went, too.

  4. Keep it open beside the game

The companion sits next to the game, it does not replace it. Alt-tabbing works, but a second monitor or a tablet is where these sheets earn their keep.

Updates

Companions get corrected and extended over time. Each game page shows the companion version and the date it was last updated — if yours is older, download it again. There is no update mechanism inside the file itself.

If something looks wrong

These are made by hand from the game data, so mistakes happen. If a value does not match what you see in the game, that is worth reporting — say which game, which sheet and which row, and it gets fixed in the next version.

Send a correction. Corrections are the most useful mail this site gets.
